A Second Life of Campus Trees Opening Reception

The trees that beautify and shade our campus have stood witness to the history of the University.   A new exhibit in the Wilson Special Collections Library, “A Second Life of Campus Trees,” looks at how campus partners transform the trunks and branches of downed trees into furniture and works of art.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the Library will hold a panel discussion featuring University/UNC staff and faculty who make this work possible, including:

  • Tom Bythell, University Arborist.
  • Susan Cohen, Associate Director, Institute for the Environment, and member of the Carolina Tree Heritage program.
  • D.J. Fedor, Technical Supervisor at BeAM@Carolina (UNC’s BE A MAKER makerspace).
  • Stephan Moll, Professor of Medicine and community artist.
  • Sarah Dean, Environmental Studies and Studio Art, Class of 2025.

The talk follows a viewing of the exhibit featuring art and other items made from trees once standing on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.
