Tableau I

tableau screenshotTableau is a user-friendly software application used to create static or interactive visualizations and dashboards. Examples can be found here.

Tableau’s drag-and-drop interface provides tools to build a variety of visualizations with no coding required, and visualizations can be embedded in websites by copying and pasting embed code. In this workshop, participants will create basic visualizations and an interactive dashboard in Tableau Public.

NOTE: This workshop requires you to bring a laptop with Tableau installed. Please follow the instructions below to download and install Tableau. If you are unable to install the software, please contact Lorin Bruckner for help.


If you are a STUDENT:

  1. Go to https://www.tableau.com/academic/students
  2. Click on "GET TABLEAU FOR FREE"
  3. Complete and submit the form provided.
  4. You should recieve an email with instructions for downloading and installing Tableau along with a lincense key.

If you are an INSTRUCTOR or using Tableau for NON-PROFIT RESEARCH:

  1. Go to https://www.tableau.com/academic/teaching
  2. Click on "REQUEST INDIVIDUAL LICENSE"
  3. Complete and submit the form provided.
  4. You should recieve an email with instructions for downloading and installing Tableau along with a lincense key.

If you are NOT a student, instructor or non-profit researcher:

  1. Go to https://public.tableau.com/
  2. Type your e-mail address into the text box and click on "Download the App".
  3. You should automatically be prompted to download a file. Save it to your computer.
  4. After downloading the file, double click on it and follow the instructions to install Tableau.

To save the work we do in the workshop, you will need a Tableau Public Profile. Follow the instructions below to create one.

  1. Go to https://public.tableau.com/
  2. In the upper right corner, click on "SIGN IN".
  3. At the bottom of the window that pops up, click on "Create one now for free".
  4. Fill out the form and click on "Create my Profile".

This workshop will also be streamed live to the Health Sciences Library. Register to attend the streaming workshop at the Health Sciences Library.
