EMILY SACKETT
Wilson Library Dissertation Research Fellowship

Talk: Women Wanted: Landed Women and the Proprietary Vision for Carolina

Emily Sackett is a third-year PhD candidate at the University of Virginia, studying early American history under Alan Taylor and Max Edelson. Sackett’s dissertation work focuses on the arrival of white women in colonial English plantation societies, specifically Virginia, Barbados, and South Carolina. She examines the influence of gendered early modern social thought on colonial authorities, and how the resulting settlement incentive programs created distinct gender and racial hierarchies in demographically disrupted colonies.

This informal program is part of the summer and fall Wilson Library Research Forum. Each program is an opportunity to hear from one or more fellows about research work that draws on the collections and expertise of the Wilson Special Collections Library.
